Post Partum Depression

New research is indicating that post partum depression is a response to proinflammatory cytokines. These cytokines rise in the last trimester of pregnancy putting women at their highest risk during this time. Pain and sleep disturbances increase inflammation making new mothers more susceptible to depression. Reducing stress is crucial to preventing and treating PPD.  Breastfeeding, exercise, and increasing EPA/DHA (omega-3) are proven to reduce stress and inflammation.  Clinics In Human Lactation by Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, Ph.D., IBCLC
